Retractable Aircraft Landing Gear

A main landing gear for a light aircraft, built as a SolidWorks motion model and a working Meccano prototype. A motor and pulley retract it, a syringe acts as the hydraulic cylinder for extension and damping, and a second syringe works the brakes.

Designed to fit a gear bay shared with three other teams (34 × 12 × 11 in, Piper PA-28R based), so every team's gear could swap into the same fuselage.

Govee Smart-Light Widget for Garmin

I wear my Garmin to bed and my phone charges across the room, so turning off my lights or fan meant getting up. I built a Connect IQ widget that does it from my wrist: it lists my Govee devices and toggles them with one button.

Written in Monkey C for the Forerunner 265, now in beta on the Connect IQ Store. Tested on my own watch, and used every night.

QuickSpiral: DIY Spiral Stair Kit

A spiral staircase a homeowner can assemble without a contractor: identical stair modules that lock onto a central column. We designed the kit, its bill of materials and installation instructions, then used a House of Quality to redesign it.

Version 2.0 added a continuous handrail, ribbed anti-slip treads and longer-lasting finishes, benchmarked against two kits on the market.

Duct Sizing Calculator

A web-based calculator for sizing HVAC ductwork. Pick what you want to solve for (velocity, cross-sectional area or flow rate) and it asks only for the inputs that answer needs, in whatever units you have.

When solving for area it suggests the most suitable duct size.

Other SolidWorks work
Hand press
Modelled a hand press as one multibody part, split it into an assembly, added a spring, then animated it and made the full drawings.
Gearbox & rack and pinion
Built a gear train and a rack and pinion, then checked how they move with a motion study.
Linear actuator
Designed a linear slide around standard off-the-shelf parts and simulated how it moves.
Barrel cam actuator
A cam with a groove cut around it that turns spinning into straight-line motion. I simulated it through a full cycle.
Stress analysis (FEA)
Put a load on a part in SolidWorks Simulation to see where the stress is and how much it bends.
Freeform surfaces
Modelled curved shapes from splines using swept, boundary, trimmed and knitted surfaces.
